whipped this up real fast. If you want to create a hologram, or something glowing that has light emitting from it, you can set the transparency of an image very simply.

In Blender, I can separately control the amounts of direct and indirect emission. That way I can cast a strong glow on nearby objects, while avoiding completely whiting out the emitter itself. For example, see the jewel on the trigam here.
